So we have now been on the island for 3 weeks, the last 2 weeks as Mission Builders (volunteers) at the YWAM (Youth With A Mission) base in Kona.
Here is a day in our lives as Mission Builders:
5:45 - wake up to catch the 6:10 van going to the base
6:15 - we all pray together to start the day
6:30 - breakfast
7:00 - start work duty, which for us is in the kitchen (steve is learning polynesian luau cooking and maybe ice sculpting from some of the paid kitchen guys that live on the island!)
9:00 - morning break, then back to work
10:45 - eat lunch
11:30 - open the lunch line and serve the other 550ish ppl living on base
2:00 - afternoon break
3:00 - done work duty
3:00 to 5:00 - steve and i exercise and do our own thing
5:00 - supper
evening - do whatever
10:00 - sleep because we're super tired! working in the kitchen is surprisingly tiring! especially since we've been sleeping as long as we want for the last 2 months.
we live about a 10 minute walk from the main ocean walkway in kona and it's beautiful; we get to catch the best sunsets whenever we want. it cools down at night so no a/c needed. we've met some wonderful people who are also mission building with us - there are about 60 mission builders and we all live in a small housing community about 10 minutes from the base. there are a bunch of singles around our age and a bunch of married retirees - turns out not many young married couples quit there jobs to travel and volunteer! when we think about it, we're so thankful for this time and know we're lucky to have it together.
we are being stretched in our faith as is usual when being with YWAM.
we posted some pictures on facebook for those of you who have it.
we may not have too many more updates as not much changes from day to day - it will be so hard to leave this place! but we are so excited to see friends and family.
love you all heaps.
stikki.
